Buy iPhone SE

Frequently Asked Questions

  • In most cases, if you purchase an iPhone on apple.com or at an Apple Store, you can activate it later. However, certain special offers or discounts may require that you authorize activation with your carrier at the time of purchase.
  • “SIM-free” means your iPhone doesn’t ship with a carrier nano-SIM. The SIM-free iPhone sold on apple.com and at the Apple Store is unlocked. That means you can use a nano-SIM or eSIM from any carrier that provides service for iPhone.*

If Sprint is your carrier, you’ll need to get a new nano-SIM card in order to activate your iPhone SE.

    * Use of eSIM requires a wireless service plan (which may include restrictions on switching service providers and roaming, even after contract expiration). Not all carriers support eSIM. Use of eSIM in iPhone may be disabled when purchased from some carriers. See your carrier for details. To learn more, visit https://support.apple.com/kb/HT209044.
  • eSIM technology allows you to add a cellular plan to your iPhone, without using a physical SIM card. Carrier-connected iPhone SE, iPhone 13, and iPhone 13 Pro models will arrive ready to activate with eSIM. You will need a Wi-Fi connection for setup.

If you choose to connect to a carrier after you buy your iPhone, you will need to contact your carrier to activate with an eSIM.*

  • Carrier-connected iPhone SE, iPhone 13, and iPhone 13 Pro models will arrive ready to activate with eSIM and can connect to your cellular voice and data service without a physical SIM card. You will need a Wi-Fi connection for setup.

To activate the eSIM on an unconnected iPhone, please contact the carrier of your choice when you’re ready.*

iPhone 12 and earlier models may arrive with a physical SIM card already installed depending on your choice of carrier.

  • The iPhone models for AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon are the same. If you choose to pay with an AT&T Installment Plan, your iPhone will be locked to the carrier. For details on network support, please see support.apple.com/en-us/HT204039.
  • iPhone SE comes in three capacities: 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. The term “GB“ stands for gigabytes. The more gigabytes you have, the more content you can store on your iPhone, such as apps, games, photos, HD videos, music, and movies. If you have a large music or photo library or lots of apps, it’s a good idea to consider an iPhone with a larger capacity. If you rarely download apps or you don’t take many photos or videos, an iPhone with a smaller capacity may be better for you.
  • Choose a carrier when you buy your iPhone and it will arrive ready to connect to a cellular data network. Just turn it on and follow the onscreen instructions to set it up and activate with the carrier. To activate with eSIM, you will need Wi-FI for setup.

To use an employer’s plan or a prepaid plan, you may need to contact your carrier, or—if your workplace employs more than 25 people—your employer, when your iPhone arrives to finish activation.

If you didn’t choose a carrier when you bought this iPhone, you’ll need to contact a carrier or insert your own SIM card. Older SIM cards may not work on a 5G network. You may need a new SIM card from your carrier.

  • AT&T, Sprint, T‑Mobile, and Verizon are the national wireless carriers for iPhone in the United States. Apple.com and the Apple Store sell iPhone models for use on these networks. You can also purchase an iPhone from an authorized Apple reseller.
  • All iPhone models are world phones, so you can use them almost anywhere. Whether you are a GSM or CDMA network customer, you can roam internationally on GSM networks in over 200 countries or regions around the world. Availability of LTE data varies in some countries or regions and depends on carrier support for certain LTE radio frequencies. Contact your wireless carrier for more information regarding international roaming policies and rates.

  • Yes. When you buy your new iPhone online or in a store, you can trade in your eligible smartphone and get credit applied to your purchase.* You can also get an Apple Gift Card online or at an Apple Store when you trade in any eligible smartphone with Apple Trade In. In either case, if your smartphone is not eligible for credit, we’ll recycle it for free. No matter the model or condition, we can turn it into something good for you and good for the planet.
  • Open the Wallet app on your iPhone and tap Apple Card. Then tap the more button (…) in the top‑right corner and choose Card Information. You can then verify your identity using Face ID, Touch ID, or your iPhone passcode.
  • You can either pay for your new iPhone in full or pay monthly with carrier financing, iPhone Payments, and now Apple Card Monthly Installments. Your carrier service plan will be charged separately. Just choose the option that works for you.

    Learn more about options

  • All iPhone purchase options available on apple.com are also available at the Apple Store, except for SIM-free iPhone purchases with Apple Card Monthly Installments. You’ll also find additional purchase options in the store, which will allow you to add a line or create a new line with your wireless carrier.*

    * If Verizon is your wireless carrier, you can add a line or create a new line on apple.com.

  • It’s our trade-in and recycling program that’s good for you and the planet. If your current smartphone is eligible for trade-in credit, you can offset the purchase price of a new one. If it’s not eligible for credit, you can recycle it for free.

  • Apple Trade In makes it easy to get credit towards the purchase of your next iPhone. Simply answer a few questions about your device. Based on what you tell us, we’ll provide an estimated trade-in value. If you pay monthly, we’ll apply the value as instant credit to lower the monthly payments of your new iPhone. If you pay in full, we’ll credit your payment method after we receive your trade-in. If it’s not eligible for credit, you can recycle it for free.

Once you receive the trade-in kit, you have 14 days to prepare and send in your device. If you added a trade-in to an iPhone order, you may receive the kit along with your new device. Otherwise, it will be mailed to you separately as soon as your new product is ready for delivery or pickup. When we receive your trade-in, we’ll verify its condition and if everything checks out, your trade-in will be complete. If your device doesn’t match the condition you described, you’ll receive an email with next steps. If you paid in full and the value of your device was more than the cost of your new iPhone, you’ll receive an Apple Gift Card by email with the remaining amount.

The online trade-in process generally takes two to three weeks.

You can also trade in your device at an Apple Store at the point of purchase. However, the trade-in value in the store may be different from the estimated trade-in value you received online.

  • Generally it takes 2–3 weeks. But the sooner you send us your device, the sooner we can verify its condition and process your trade-in.

Recycling a device is much faster. When we email you a prepaid shipping label, just send your device to our recycling partner.

  • If the net price of your new iPhone is less than $99 after trading in your existing smartphone, you will not be offered the option to pay monthly with Apple. You will, however, be able to continue your transaction and either pay monthly with carrier financing or pay in full for the remaining amount due.
