Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)

  • Overview

The 85 Watt MagSafe Power Adapter features a magnetic DC connector that ensures your power cable will disconnect if it experiences undue strain and helps prevent fraying or weakening of the cables over time. In addition, the magnetic DC helps guide the plug into the system for a quick and secure connection.

When the connection is secure, an LED located at the head of the DC connector will light up; an amber light lets you know that your portable is charging, while a green light tells you that you have a full charge. An AC lead is provided with the adapter for maximum lead length, while the AC wall adapter (also provided) gives users an even easier and more compact way to travel.

Designed to be the perfect travelling companion, the adapter has a clever design that allows the DC cable to be wound neatly around itself for easy cable storage.

This power adapter recharges the lithium polymer battery while the system is off, on, or in sleep mode. It also powers the system if you choose to operate without a battery.

Compatible with 15- or 17-inch MacBook Pro.

Not sure if this is the right power adapter for your Mac?

See this article for more details about choosing the right one.

Knowing which specific Mac model you have is important. If you are running OS X Lion (10.7) or later, go to the “” menu at the top left of your screen, choose “About this Mac” then click the “More Info...” button. Your Mac model and generation will be displayed.

      Dear Apple

For such a great engineering company, why can't you get the obvious things fixed. These cords fray at the connector. ALL of them do. Sometimes at the power brick, sometimes at the Mac end. Then I have to go spend 80 bucks for another adapter - when all I really need is the cord. So do the right thing, and put a MagSafe connector on BOTH ends of the cord, and a MagSafe jack on the side of the power brick just like the one on the side of the computer. Then, I could (1) disconnect the cord completely from the adapter when it's in my bag, and not have to worry about the cord getting bent and broken where it connects to the power brick, (2) could have my choice of cord lenghts - maybe a short one for my desk and a long one when I travel, and (3) I could replace JUST THE CORD if it got damaged or worn, for something like 5 or 6 bucks instead of 80. What do you think? Would it be so hard to do?

Yes for Unibody, No for older MBP's

The port on the new MacBooks are smaller and more shallow, this charger reflects this change and will not make contact with older ports found on non-unibody. Buyer beware, save yourself the hassle and find an 'I" MagSafe charger if you have a non-unibody.

Why won't Apple fix these awful power cords?

They are horribly overpriced at $80 and they break every 8 months or so. Clearly a goldmine for Apple. In the past 3 years, I've had one break near the magnetic end and one near the wall plug end. A third just mysteriously quit working, though it looks brand new. I am very careful with these cords, but it makes no difference. Also, they get dangerously hot. I had just talked my mom into switching from PC to Mac, but honestly now I might talk her back into a PC. I know these complaints are not new. Several reviews say the same thing. So when is Apple going to fix the problem? Or at least come up with a "Buy 3 Cords Get 1 Free" deal?

      Spark the smoke

Come on Apple. I looked down after hearing a loud pop and spark. I've never abused my charger. It's been under my desk for 3 years. No tension on cord. At least Come on Apple. At least give us the ability to upload an image of my melted and shorted power cord. This thing could have caught my house on fire! I can't believe there isn't a class action lawsuit in motion.

Reason I may not stay with Apple products...

I have all of my important work on my laptop. I used it during Uni and now I'm using it for work. I have everything on it, which is why it's incredibly inconvenient to have the power adapter fail on you when time is of the essence. Why are they so badly manufactured? And why are they so expensive? It's failed on me again and I haven't even taken out the extensions that came with it from their packaging. I tried out one of them, but it's not the thicker cord that you can detatch that's the problem, but the skinner one that attaches to the laptop. Why can't you just make it easier for consumers and make that cord detatchable and replaceable? It's not hard, you just need to stop thinking about your pecuniary interests and rather think about making your consumers happier.

Charger broke, AGAIN, FOR THE SECOND TIME IN 5 YEARS!!!

The price for a new charger is ridiculous! Money first, loyalty second? I have been a loyal customer of Apple products for the better part 15 years! What is the logic behind not fixing this problem?
