Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)

  • Overview

The 85 Watt MagSafe Power Adapter features a magnetic DC connector that ensures your power cable will disconnect if it experiences undue strain and helps prevent fraying or weakening of the cables over time. In addition, the magnetic DC helps guide the plug into the system for a quick and secure connection.

When the connection is secure, an LED located at the head of the DC connector will light up; an amber light lets you know that your portable is charging, while a green light tells you that you have a full charge. An AC lead is provided with the adapter for maximum lead length, while the AC wall adapter (also provided) gives users an even easier and more compact way to travel.

Designed to be the perfect travelling companion, the adapter has a clever design that allows the DC cable to be wound neatly around itself for easy cable storage.

This power adapter recharges the lithium polymer battery while the system is off, on, or in sleep mode. It also powers the system if you choose to operate without a battery.

Compatible with 15- or 17-inch MacBook Pro.

For such a great engineering company, why can't you get the obvious things fixed. These cords fray at the connector. ALL of them do. Sometimes at the power brick, sometimes at the Mac end. Then I have to go spend 80 bucks for another adapter - when all I really need is the cord. So do the right thing, and put a MagSafe connector on BOTH ends of the cord, and a MagSafe jack on the side of the power brick just like the one on the side of the computer. Then, I could (1) disconnect the cord completely from the adapter when it's in my bag, and not have to worry about the cord getting bent and broken where it connects to the power brick, (2) could have my choice of cord lenghts - maybe a short one for my desk and a long one when I travel, and (3) I could replace JUST THE CORD if it got damaged or worn, for something like 5 or 6 bucks instead of 80. What do you think? Would it be so hard to do?

Yes for Unibody, No for older MBP's

The port on the new MacBooks are smaller and more shallow, this charger reflects this change and will not make contact with older ports found on non-unibody. Buyer beware, save yourself the hassle and find an 'I" MagSafe charger if you have a non-unibody.

They are horribly overpriced at $80 and they break every 8 months or so. Clearly a goldmine for Apple. In the past 3 years, I've had one break near the magnetic end and one near the wall plug end. A third just mysteriously quit working, though it looks brand new. I am very careful with these cords, but it makes no difference. Also, they get dangerously hot. I had just talked my mom into switching from PC to Mac, but honestly now I might talk her back into a PC. I know these complaints are not new. Several reviews say the same thing. So when is Apple going to fix the problem? Or at least come up with a "Buy 3 Cords Get 1 Free" deal?

They last about a year before fraying at both ends with ordinary use. I even covered mine with electrical tape when purchased to improve its resilience but it made no difference. It's very frustrating. I agree with all previous reviews I've seen that rate this product poorly: Apple, you need to redesign this accessory to match the quality of your other superb products. At minimum the cord needs to swivel at both ends and needs to be made with a better protective covering that does not disintegrate with ordinary heat generated by the electrical current. It may be user friendly with the capability to wrap the cord for easy storage but it's not SAFE for the customer or our laptop devices.

      Rubbish cables, aren't they?

I have instrument cables and power supplies that have toured all over the UK and Europe with me since 1998. Yes, instrument cables that are more than 20 years old... and in perfect working order. I have two Magsafe Macbook adapters. One never travels, but just has the connector available to plug the Macbook into on the desk. Never gets pulled, twisted, tangled, trodden on... unlike those cables I mentioned above. I'm on my THIRD home adapter since 2013. The sheathing splits, tears, and finally disintegrates completely. I've tried preserving one a bit longer by using shrink-wrap over the first tiny split. All that did was make it split where the shrink-wrap ends instead. The travelling adapter is carefully transported in a metal laptop case, loosely coiled in a bag. It will last less than a year before there are multiple splits in the sheathing. Total and utter RUBBISH for a professional product. There is NO excuse for Apple's adapters and cables being so poor when my other, far cheaper adapters and cables last twenty years. I'm sick of spending £80 over and over again.

      Onto my Fourth Charger

Just as everybody else says, the charger always frays at the end. I'm onto my fourth charger, this is absolutely pathetic.
