iPhone features the most revolutionary user interface since the mouse. Its large multi-touch display and pioneering new software open up new possibilities for access to technology by users with disabilities.

iPhone Accessibility Features

Zoom

iPhone makes it easy to view your content up close. Its 3.5-inch high-resolution display and software-based interface allow you to zoom in on web pages, email, attachments, Google Maps, and photos.

iPhone showing TTY preferences

TTY support

You can use iPhone in TTY mode with standard teletype machines. Use of TTY requires the iPhone TTY Adapter, sold separately through the Apple Online Store. TTY customers can obtain telephone technical support by calling Apple’s support number, 1-800-SOS-APPL, using a relay service.

Predictive text entry

The soft QWERTY keyboard makes it easier to type by displaying only the keys you need and intelligently suggesting complete words as you type.

iPhone showing Font size options

Giant font size for Mail messages

iPhone allows you to increase the default font size of email text for improved readability. Set the minimum font size for Mail messages to large, extra-large, or giant.

Large numeric keypad

Large numeric keypad for dialing

To make a phone call, simply tap a name displayed in a large font, or use the large numeric keypad to dial.

Network-based voice dialing

iPhone is compatible with network-based voice dialing where available. Check with your wireless carrier for more information.

Hands-free speakerphone

The built-in speakerphone makes hands-free communication easy and provides another way to listen to calls, music, podcasts, and videos.

Audible, visible, and vibrating alerts

When the ringer is on, iPhone delivers alerts audibly as well as visibly on the touch screen. In silent mode, iPhone delivers vibrating alerts as well as visible alerts.

Assignable ringtones

You can assign distinctive ringtones to individuals in your contacts for audible caller ID.

Visual Voicemail

With Visual Voicemail, you can view all of your voicemail messages, then hear them in whatever order you want — just like email. The Play/Pause button lets you control playback, and the scrubber bar allows you to replay a portion of a message that might be hard to understand.

Chat-like SMS

The iPhone SMS application provides text-based SMS in a familiar iChat-like interface that lets you manage, track, and save multiple chat conversations.

Automatic sync using iTunes

Just connect iPhone to your Mac or PC, and iTunes automatically updates your contacts, calendar, and photos. You can also use iTunes to manage your music, TV shows, movies, and podcasts and sync them with iPhone. On a Mac, you can take advantage of the Universal Access features of Mac OS X to increase accessibility. For more information, go to the Finder, choose Help > Mac Help, then search for “universal access.”

Alternative Format user’s guide

The iPhone User’s Guide is available in electronic PDF format. Alternative formats are coming soon.
