Importing Music to Your iPod

iTunes and iPod were made for each other, so moving your music to your iPod is as easy as “plug and play.” When you connect your iPod to your computer, the iPod automatically checks to make sure that the music in your iTunes library is also on your iPod. So, if you’ve added new music, iTunes makes sure your iPod is up-to-date.
 
You can include the music in your iTunes music library on more than one iPod, so if you and a family member, for example, enjoy the same music, you can each link your iPod to the same iTunes library. You can’t, however, link an iPod to more than one library, which means you can’t add songs from someone else’s collection to your iPod.

Recharge your iPod battery

Every time you plug in your iPod to your computer or place it in its Dock, you’re automatically charging its rechargeable battery. You can also charge the battery by simply plugging in the iPod to a wall outlet with the power cable provided. You can still use your iPod even while it’s charging. If you connect your iPod and the battery icon doesn’t animate, the battery is already fully charged. You can safely disconnect and use your iPod before it’s fully charged.

Turn off your iPod to preserve battery power

When you’re finished listening to music on your iPod, you’ll want to turn it off so that you don’t drain the battery. Press and hold the Play/Pause button until the iPod turns off. If you carry the iPod with you often, consider using the Hold switch on top of your iPod. Placing your iPod in Hold mode makes all the buttons inactive, which prevents your iPod from turning on if a button is accidentally pressed in your pocket or bag.

If you see a message indicating you will overwrite the contents of the iPod

If you connect your iPod to a computer with a music library that is not linked with your iPod, you will be prompted to either overwrite the contents of your iPod with the new library or choose not to link and retain your own music collection on your iPod.

Transfer your music to your iPod by following these steps:
  1. Connect your iPod to your computer using the FireWire cable or optional USB 2.0 cable.
  2. Notice that iTunes opens automatically and transfers all the songs and playlists in your music library to your iPod. The icon representing your iPod in the Source list flashes red during the update. Do not disconnect your iPod while music is being transferred.
  3. After the transfer is complete, safely disconnect your iPod by selecting your iPod in the Source list, and then clicking the Eject button in the lower-right corner of the iTunes window.
