Making the Move to iTunes

Whether you’ve never played music on your computer or you’ve been using digital music players for years, you’ll find that iTunes makes it fun and easy to organize and play music on your computer. With iTunes you can easily import songs from your favorite CDs or purchase music online from the iTunes Music Store. From there you’ll be able to create custom playlists, burn CDs, and even share your music with others on your network.

iTunes makes it easy to get started even if you’ve already been using digital music software. iTunes can automatically search for any music files on your computer and then add them to your iTunes library.

Tips   Step by Step

Manually adding music stored on your hard disk
If you have music on your hard disk or external drive you can easily add it to your iTunes library. Simply select the music file (or folder of music files) and drag it into the Library window.

Import playlists from other music players
As part of your move to iTunes, you may also want to move your playlists. Search your hard disk for the title of the playlist you want to import. When you locate it, drag it to your desktop so you’ll know where it is. Then in iTunes, open the File menu and choose Import.

Consolidate your music library
In Windows, when the iTunes Setup Assistant locates a music file or when you drag a music file into iTunes, a link is made to that files location on your hard disk. To keep all your music in a single location on your hard disk, open the Advanced menu and choose Consolidate Library. These files are copied and placed in your iTunes Music folder. With all your music in one place, you can more easily copy it to another Windows PC or Mac or back up your music library to an external hard disk or other media.

Add your existing digital music and playlists to iTunes by following these steps:

  1. Open iTunes by double-clicking its icon.
  2. When the Setup Assistant appears, choose the option to have iTunes search for music files stored on your computer.
  3. When that’s complete, have the iTunes Setup Assistant take you to your music library to see all your music files.
