Other Ways to Use Your iPod

Did you know that your iPod is more than just a personal music player? You can use your iPod to record voice memos, store your digital pictures, view your contact names and addresses, and more. And in most cases you can continue to listen to your music while you’re using your iPod in these other ways.

With the large storage capacity of your iPod, you’ll have plenty of room for your music and your other files. This is really convenient if you want to make sure you always have certain files with you wherever you are, for example, your resume or your latest school project. You can attach your iPod to any Mac with a FireWire port or PC with a FireWire or USB 2.0 port, and either transfer the files or use them right from the iPod.

Tips  Step by Step

Record voice memos on your iPod
Using an iPod-compatible microphone, you can record voice memos on your iPod and transfer them to iTunes. Simply connect the microphone, and select Record to begin recording. Your voice memos can be played back on your iPod. And when you sync your iPod with iTunes, you’ll see a Voice Memos playlist appear in the source list.

Transfer photos from your digital camera to your iPod
Using an iPod-compatible media card reader, you can store digital photos on your iPod. This is great when you’re out taking pictures and you’ve filled your memory card. Simply connect the card reader, download your photos, erase the photos from the card and you’re ready to go again. Later, connect your iPod to your computer and you’ll find the photos stored in the DCIM folder.

Wake up or go to sleep with your music
You can use the sleep timer on your iPod so that you can fall asleep to your music. Your iPod will turn off after the amount of time you specify. And with the alarm clock feature, you can choose either an alarm tone or your favorite music to wake you up.

Play games on your iPod
While listening to your music, you can use your iPod to play games. iPod now includes Solitaire, Brick, Parachute, and even a game to test your knowledge of your own musical tastes.

Enable your iPod to work as a portable hard disk by following these steps:

  1. Connect your iPod to your computer.
  2. Select your iPod in the iTunes Source list.
  3. Click the Options button in the lower-right corner of the iTunes window to open the iPod preferences window.
  4. Click “Enable disk use.” This will allow your iPod to both store your files and play your music.
  5. Notice the icon that appears onscreen. Double-click the icon to see what’s stored on your iPod.
  6. Drag the files you want to store on your iPod to the iPod window.
  7. When you’re done, click the iPod Eject button in the lower-right corner of the iTunes window. The iPod screen will display “OK to disconnect” when it is safe to unplug it.

If you want to eject your iPod and iTunes is not running
If you’ve enabled your iPod to be used as both a music player and a portable hard disk, you’ll need to eject the iPod from your computer before you disconnect it. Click the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows System Tray, and then select the iPod to remove.
