Arthur Phillip High School

Podcasting for the future

For quite a number of students, the introduction of Apple computers and experience in developing podcasts is already boding well for future studies and careers. One student, who has ambitions for a career in radio stated: “I’m really very interested in getting into radio; and podcasting is a way I see of getting in there. If I’m successful in podcasting at school then that could well be a gateway into my radio career.”

Another student says: “A lot of people end up having to go to TAFE to learn how to use computers in the workplace, simply because they didn’t have the opportunity to use them at school. We’re constantly using new technology, so we have a definite head start.”

As the potential for podcasts to be used as educational tools becomes increasingly apparent, numerous other projects and applications are being proposed and explored. One such application is an audio-and-video podcast detailing the dissection of a frog; and in history, students are using iMovie – the iLife suite’s movie editing software – and GarageBand to capture re-enactments of medieval battles.

In summing up the future of podcasting at Arthur Phillip High School, Ms Goodwin says: “It has an absolute future in the school and with the children. But it will depend on the ingenuity of the teachers and students – working together – as to how high we can fly.”
