What you need to know when buying iPhone.
Before You Arrive
- Upgrade your existing iPhone to the latest iOS release. Just connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC and follow the onscreen instructions in iTunes.
- Back up the data on your existing iPhone to iCloud or your computer. For instructions on how to back up your iPhone, read this Support page.
- Create a new Apple ID if you don’t already have one by visiting the Apple ID page.
What to Bring with You
Outright Purchase:
- Photo ID if requiring a Micro-SIM for your iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S.
Pre-Paid for Optus, Telstra and Vodafone:
- Valid primary ID such as a driver's licence or passport that includes your photograph, signature and primary address.
Post-Paid rate plan1 for iPhone purchase and activation:
Current Optus, Telstra and Vodafone customers:
- Valid primary ID such as a drivers licence or passport that must include your photograph, signature and primary address.
- Current account details for the account under your name.
New Optus, Telstra and Vodafone customers:
- Valid primary ID such as a driver's licence or passport that must include your photograph, signature and primary address.
- Valid secondary ID such as a utility bill, health card or credit card.
- The combination of primary and secondary ID must equal 100 points or more.
Upgrade options for current iPhone owners and existing Optus, Telstra or Vodafone customers:
There are a variety of upgrade options for existing customers. To learn more about upgrading, check with your local Apple Retail Store for more details. Upgrade or termination fees and other charges may apply.
Business customers:
The Apple Retail Store provides iPhone solutions for business with Optus and Telstra. To have your business email set up on your iPhone, first check with your IT manager and then bring your account details to your local Apple Retail Store. Customers who wish to purchase an iPhone under a corporate account can do so by contacting their carrier directly.
iPhone Warranty
iPhone comes with 90 days of complimentary telephone technical support2. In addition, your iPhone, its rechargeable battery and all included accessories are covered against defects for a full year from the purchase date by a limited hardware warranty.
AppleCare for iPhone
AppleCare for iPhone extends your coverage to two years from the original purchase date of your iPhone. With AppleCare for iPhone, Apple experts can help troubleshoot issues over the phone or at an Apple Retail Store. They’ll answer questions about iOS, Apple iPhone apps such as Mail, iMessage and Calendar, and help you solve interconnectivity issues between your iPhone and Mac or PC. And if your iPhone needs service under the plan, Apple technical support representatives can even set up a repair during the same call. AppleCare for iPhone is just A$99 RRP inc GST.3

If I lose my iPhone, can I buy a replacement iPhone?
Yes. You can purchase a replacement iPhone from the Apple Online Store, an Apple Retail Store or your carrier’s store. Your price will depend on whether you qualify for a carrier subsidy. You can also purchase an unlocked iPhone from the Apple Online Store or Apple Retail Store and you can obtain a micro-SIM card from the Apple Retail Store as well as supported GSM carrier.
If I already have a contract, how can I find out the price I’ll pay for a new iPhone?
The fastest way to find out about the price you’ll pay for a new iPhone is to contact a carrier. Your carrier will let you know whether you qualify for the lowest price or for an early upgrade or full upgrade price.
Can I transfer my current phone number?
Yes. When you purchase your iPhone, you’ll be instructed on how to transfer your current number. You can keep using your existing phone until your new iPhone arrives and you set it up. Then you can start making calls on the new iPhone using your current phone number. If you are switching carriers, termination fees may apply. Please contact your current carrier for details.
Can I use my current rate plan with an iPhone?
You may be able to keep your current voice plan, but you are also required to have a data plan.
Can I use an iPhone when traveling internationally?
iPhone 4S is a world phone, so you can use it almost anywhere. You can roam on GSM networks in 200 countries around the world. Contact your mobile phone carrier for more information regarding international roaming policies and rates.
