Siri and Dictation

If you choose to enable Siri AI and opt in to Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence, Apple may store all your interactions with Siri and Dictation, including the audio data and transcripts of what you say and type to Siri, and the response Siri provides.

To protect your privacy, this data is not associated with your Apple Account and Apple takes steps to ensure personal details are not stored or used by Apple. For example, Apple does not collect the photos or attachments you provide to Siri, the content of notifications Siri reads to you or the information Siri searches on your device. We also take steps to remove data such as phone numbers and email addresses, as well as content from messages, emails or on-device search results used in Siri’s responses.

Audio data, transcripts including requests, responses and conversations, and related request data, such as the category of request you made, device specifications, performance statistics and the approximate location of your device at the time the request was made, may be used to develop and improve Siri, Dictation, Search and other language-processing functionality in Apple products and services. For example, transcripts may be used to fine-tune Siri, Search, Voice Control, Translate and automatic speech recognition models. Additionally, Siri audio data, transcripts and related request data may be used to train Apple’s foundation models, which power Apple Intelligence and other Apple features, as well as features in apps that use Apple’s Foundation Models framework. A subset of this data may be reviewed by graders, with audio review being conducted only by Apple employees.

Your Siri audio data, transcripts and any related request data are associated with a random, device-generated identifier that rotates multiple times per hour and is not tied to your Apple Account or email address. To improve Siri’s ability to provide more personalised and relevant responses, Apple may connect multiple random identifiers associated with a conversation over time if you re-engage with that conversation. If you make follow-up requests to continue a conversation with Siri, Apple will also collect what you say to Siri and the responses provided in that conversation.

Data that Apple collects when you choose to opt in to Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence may be retained and used for up to two years, and the small subset of interactions that has been reviewed may be kept beyond two years for the ongoing improvement of Siri, Dictation, Search, other language-processing features and Apple’s foundation models.

Your request history is not used to build a marketing profile, and is never sold to anyone.

If one of your Siri or Dictation interactions is selected for review, the request, as well as the response Siri provided, will be analysed to determine accuracy and to generally improve Siri, Dictation, Search, other language-processing functionality in Apple products and services, and Apple’s foundation models. Depending on the context of your request, a reviewer may access additional contextual data directly relevant to the request, such as names of your contacts or apps installed on your devices, in order to grade the effectiveness of Siri’s response. Only Apple employees, subject to strict confidentiality obligations, are able to access audio interactions with Siri and Dictation. You can change your setting for Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence at any time. To do so, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements.

ChatGPT Extension

When you choose to enable the ChatGPT extension in Siri and opt in to Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence, Apple may store all your requests, including the audio recording and transcripts of your request, and any conversation associated with that request. This data is part of your Siri and Dictation request history, and is used and retained by Apple as described above.

Apple collects limited information about ChatGPT’s response back to you, such as the approximate size of the response, in order to operate the service and prevent fraud. For more information, visit apple.com/legal/privacy/data/en/chatgpt-extension.

You can delete the transcripts of your Siri and Dictation requests that are stored on your device by going to Settings > Siri > Turn Off Siri, then tapping Turn Off Siri.

You can disable Siri and Dictation by going to Settings > General > Keyboard and tapping to turn off Enable Dictation. Next, go to Settings > Siri > Talk & Type to Siri and tap Off, then tap to turn off Press Side Button for Siri and Type to Siri. The transcripts of your Siri and Dictation requests that are stored on your device and used to personalise your experience will be deleted if you disable Siri and Dictation.

Translate

If you opt in to Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence, your audio, text input and transcripts of your Translate requests, associated with random, rotating, device-generated identifiers, may be stored and reviewed to develop and improve Siri, Dictation, Translate, other language-processing functionality in Apple products and services, and Apple’s foundation models.

Your Translate requests may be retained for up to two years to help Apple develop and improve Siri, Dictation, Translate, other language-processing functionality and Apple’s foundation models. For example, transcripts may be used to fine-tune Siri, Search, Voice Control, Translate and automatic speech recognition models. If one of your Translate interactions is selected for review, the translation request, as well as the translation response provided, will be analysed to determine accuracy. Only Apple employees, subject to strict confidentiality obligations, are able to access your Translate audio. The small subset of your Translate interactions that have been reviewed may be kept beyond two years for ongoing improvement of Siri, Dictation, Translate and other language-processing functionality in Apple products and services.

General

The opt-in preference you selected when you set up an iPhone or iPad will apply to any new Apple connected device or supported HomeKit accessory set up with that iPhone or iPad that has Siri turned on. You can change this later in the settings for each device.

By enabling Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence, you agree and consent to Apple’s and its subsidiaries’ and agents’ transmission, collection, maintenance, processing and use of this information to provide and improve Siri, Dictation, Search, Translate and other language-processing functionality in Apple products and services, and to train Apple’s foundation models, as described above. Apple may process and store this information with trusted third-party service providers. At all times, information collected by Apple from your use of Siri, Dictation or Translate will be treated in accordance with Apple’s Privacy Policy, which can be found at apple.com/uk/privacy.
