Schoolwork & Privacy

Schoolwork is designed with student privacy in mind.

Apple collects data about your use of Schoolwork to provide and improve the app.

Student Data

When you launch Schoolwork as a student while signed in to your Managed Apple ID, Apple collects data on activities your teacher assigns to you through Schoolwork, such as when you mark an activity as complete and your feedback on assigned activities, in order to provide the app. If your School or Institution (“Institution”) enables the Student Progress feature in Apple School Manager, Apple will receive data about your progress on assigned activities from ClassKit-enabled apps (“progress data”) so that your teachers can better understand your learning progress. Your Institution is responsible for your progress data under the Apple School Manager Agreement and has the ability to opt out students from sharing their progress at their request. If you want to stop sharing your progress with your Institution, or to delete your progress data, contact your Institution.

Apple also collects non-personally identifiable coarse location data and usage data against group identifiers associated with your Institution, the approximate date on which you started using Schoolwork and an account identifier generated every 13 months. Apple uses this data, which is not associated with your Managed Apple ID, to provide and improve the app. For example, Apple may collect usage data associated with group identifiers on when you view certain assignments and pages within the app, start or continue an activity, or open a document.

Teacher Data

When you launch Schoolwork as a teacher while signed in to your Managed Apple ID, Apple collects data on your assignments, such as details on assigned activities, the classes you teach and student names, in order to provide the app. Apple also collects non-personally identifiable coarse location data and usage data against group identifiers associated with your Institution, as well as group identifiers associated with your assignments and classes. Apple uses this data, which is not associated with your Managed Apple ID, to provide and improve the app. For example, we may collect usage data on when you view certain assignments and pages within the app. We may also collect usage data on how you create, edit, delete and otherwise manage students, classes and assignments.

If you launch Schoolwork as a teacher to initiate the onboarding process for receiving a Managed Apple ID from your Institution, we collect non-personally identifiable usage data about your interaction with the app, such as whether this is the first time you’re initiating the onboarding process within the last 24 hours and whether Schoolwork was installed by your Institution’s Mobile Device Management system. If you successfully complete the onboarding process and subsequently launch Schoolwork while signed in to your Managed Apple ID, we will collect data on whether you have completed the onboarding process.

Improving Schoolwork

Your Institution may allow Apple to process your Schoolwork usage data, including the student and teacher data described above using techniques such as machine learning, for the purpose of improving Schoolwork. Before data is processed, it is subject to privacy preserving techniques such as differential privacy so that it cannot be linked to you. For example, Apple may process your de-identified or aggregated Schoolwork data to understand trends in usage, customise user experience and develop new education features for Schoolwork. The first time you access Schoolwork while signed in to your Managed Apple ID after your Institution enables this feature, you will receive an onscreen notification. Your Institution has the ability to opt out individual students and teachers from this feature. To opt out, contact your Institution.

Information collected by Apple in connection with its provision of services requiring a Managed Apple ID under the Apple School Manager Agreement will be treated in accordance with Apple’s Privacy Policy, which can be found at www.apple.com/uk/privacy, and Section 3 and Exhibit A of the Apple School Manager Agreement, which can be found at school.apple.com. If there is a conflict between Apple’s Privacy Policy and Section 3 and Exhibit A of the Apple School Manager Agreement, Section 3 and Exhibit A of the Apple School Manager Agreement will take precedence.
