Paying attention to just a few common sense pointers will pay off with a longer battery lifespan and battery life for your iPad. The most important thing is to keep your iPad out of the sun or a hot car (including not leaving it locked up in a hot trunk during summer). Heat will degrade your battery’s performance the most.
Some Terms You Need to Understand
“Battery life” means the time your iPad will run before it must be recharged. “Battery lifespan” means the total amount of time your battery will last before it may need to be replaced. Battery lifespan is based on the number of charge/discharge cycles your battery is capable of to retain more than 80% of its original capacity.
Update to the Latest Software
Always make sure your iPad has the latest software. Apple engineers may find new ways to optimize battery performance. Update your iPad to the latest version of iOS over Wi-Fi or using iTunes. On your iPad, go to Settings > General > Software Update to check for the latest software.
Optimize Your Settings
There are a number of iPad settings you can adjust to minimize power consumption and extend battery life, including screen brightness. These tips may help extend your battery life.
- Adjust brightness: Managing the screen brightness is the best way to extend iPad battery life. Auto-Brightness adjusts iPad screen brightness based on ambient lighting conditions, therefore minimizing battery drain. Adjust your brightness when indoors in a nonbright environment by going to Settings > Wallpapers & Brightness and dragging the slider to the left to dim. After making this change, turn Auto-Brightness off and then on again to reset to the default behavior.
- Use Airplane Mode (Cellular models) in low- or no-coverage areas: Because your iPad always tries to maintain a connection with a Wi-Fi network or cellular data network, it may use more power in low- or no-coverage areas. Turning on Airplane Mode can increase battery life in these situations. To turn on Airplane Mode, go to Settings and set Airplane Mode to On.
- Lock your iPad: It may seem obvious, but you should lock your iPad when you aren’t using it. To lock iPad, press the Sleep/Wake button. You can also set the Auto-Lock interval so your iPad will turn off more quickly after a period of inactivity. To set Auto-Lock, go to Settings > General > Auto-Lock and set the interval to a short time, such as 1 minute.
- Turn off Push Mail and fetch data manually: The more frequently email or other data is pushed or fetched, the quicker your battery may drain. To turn off Push and to fetch new data manually, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data and set Push to Off. Then set Fetch to Manually. Messages sent to your push email accounts will now be received on your iPad based on the Fetch setting rather than as they arrive.
- Minimize use of location services: Applications that actively use location services, such as Maps, may reduce battery life. To monitor location usage, go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services. You can see which applications have recently used location services (a key at the bottom of the preference pane explains each icon). If you see an application that you do not expect to be consuming battery power by using location services, you can disable by setting the switch next to the application to Off. To disable all location services, go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services and set Location Services to Off.
Use Your iPad Regularly
For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).
Long-Term Storage of Your iPad
- If you want to store your iPad long term, two key factors will affect the overall health of your battery: the environmental temperature and the percentage of charge on the iPad when it is powered down for storage. Therefore, we recommend the following:
- Place your iPad in a cool, moisture-free environment that is less than 90° F (30° C).
- Charge the battery to around 50%. Do not fully charge your iPad.
- Power down the iPad to avoid additional battery use.
- Depending on how long you store your iPad, it may be in a low-battery state when you remove it from long-term storage. After it is removed from storage, your iPad may require 20 minutes of charging with the original adapter before you can use it.
