Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)

  • Overview

The 85 Watt MagSafe Power Adapter features a magnetic DC connector that ensures your power cable will disconnect if it experiences undue strain and helps prevent fraying or weakening of the cables over time. In addition, the magnetic DC helps guide the plug into the system for a quick and secure connection.

When the connection is secure, an LED located at the head of the DC connector will light up; an amber light lets you know that your portable is charging, while a green light tells you that you have a full charge. An AC lead is provided with the adapter for maximum lead length, while the AC wall adapter (also provided) gives users an even easier and more compact way to travel.

Designed to be the perfect travelling companion, the adapter has a clever design that allows the DC cable to be wound neatly around itself for easy cable storage.

This power adapter recharges the lithium polymer battery while the system is off, on, or in sleep mode. It also powers the system if you choose to operate without a battery.

Compatible with 15- or 17-inch MacBook Pro.

      Dear Apple

For such a great engineering company, why can't you get the obvious things fixed. These cords fray at the connector. ALL of them do. Sometimes at the power brick, sometimes at the Mac end. Then I have to go spend 80 bucks for another adapter - when all I really need is the cord. So do the right thing, and put a MagSafe connector on BOTH ends of the cord, and a MagSafe jack on the side of the power brick just like the one on the side of the computer. Then, I could (1) disconnect the cord completely from the adapter when it's in my bag, and not have to worry about the cord getting bent and broken where it connects to the power brick, (2) could have my choice of cord lenghts - maybe a short one for my desk and a long one when I travel, and (3) I could replace JUST THE CORD if it got damaged or worn, for something like 5 or 6 bucks instead of 80. What do you think? Would it be so hard to do?

Yes for Unibody, No for older MBP's

The port on the new MacBooks are smaller and more shallow, this charger reflects this change and will not make contact with older ports found on non-unibody. Buyer beware, save yourself the hassle and find an 'I" MagSafe charger if you have a non-unibody.

Why won't Apple fix these awful power cords?

They are horribly overpriced at $80 and they break every 8 months or so. Clearly a goldmine for Apple. In the past 3 years, I've had one break near the magnetic end and one near the wall plug end. A third just mysteriously quit working, though it looks brand new. I am very careful with these cords, but it makes no difference. Also, they get dangerously hot. I had just talked my mom into switching from PC to Mac, but honestly now I might talk her back into a PC. I know these complaints are not new. Several reviews say the same thing. So when is Apple going to fix the problem? Or at least come up with a "Buy 3 Cords Get 1 Free" deal?

Cheap Cord; Easily Breaks; Too Expensive

Ridiculously expensive for a product that you will most likely need to replace 2-3 times in the lifespan of your MacBook Pro as I have. Second one to fail, no matter how well I look after it.

After 18 months my second charger has split where the thin cable enters the converter. I couldn't have handled it any more carefully than I do, well aware that After 18 months my second charger has split where the thin cable enters the converter. I couldn't have handled it any more carefully than I do, well aware that they might as well be made out of jelly. The previous one lasted 4 years so it seems they're getting even worse, not better. Come on Apple, look at the reviews on your cables - they're all rubbish. Do something about it!

Absolute disgrace. I've owned one MacBook Pro and really love it, but now had two MagSafe cables fail in exactly the same place - They always break at the end w Absolute disgrace. I've owned one MacBook Pro and really love it, but now had two MagSafe cables fail in exactly the same place - They always break at the end where the cable joins the connector. And £70 for a new one?! It's a total scam really. On the last one I bought I managed to extend the life of the cable a bit more by wrapping insulation tape around the cable. Somehow it STILL seemed to break. I'll be trying the cheaper knock-offs on Amazon now. I can buy three of them for the same price!
