iCloud Mail supports intelligence features like Mail Cleanup, which helps you keep your inbox clean and free up storage, such as by deleting old promotions or unsubscribing from mailing lists. In order to power this and other intelligence features, Apple may process information you’ve stored with Apple, such as the content of your Mail, Contacts, or Calendar. This helps provide additional functionality, such as retrieving relevant results for a search query, suggesting a contact by name as you compose a message, or identifying a potential event to add to your calendar. Apple processes only the data necessary to support each feature. You have the ability to turn off these features at any time in Settings.
iCloud Mail also includes features like Categorization, which organizes your email into categories such as Primary, Transactions, Updates, and Promotions. If you access iCloud Mail on iCloud.com, Apple processes certain email metadata, such as senders and email header information, in order to both categorize your emails and generate cleanup recommendations. When accessing your emails in the Mail app on iOS, Categorization processing occurs entirely on-device. You have the ability to change the categorization of an email at any time. You can reset all manual categorizations you may have performed, and you can choose to turn off Mail Categorization on iCloud.com entirely, in Settings.
