Applying for Apple Upgrade
When you begin a lease or loan application through Apple Upgrade, you are providing information to Apple and Klarna Inc. (“Klarna”), and, for loan applications, WebBank (“WebBank”), Klarna’s bank partner for loan offerings. When you apply for a lease or loan through Apple Upgrade, your name, birth date, email address, billing address, and device phone number are used by Klarna or WebBank as applicable, to verify your identity and to help prevent fraud. Klarna also uses this information, whether you are eligible for an upgrade, and information regarding the proposed lease or loan order to process your application and to set up your account or verify your existing account. Apple and Klarna may also receive information from your carrier about your application phone number to help prevent fraud. Klarna uses third-party identity verification service providers to verify account owners’ partial or full Social Security number and country of citizenship; Apple does not read or store this information.
Additional information about your Apple Account and device may be provided by Apple to Klarna or WebBank as applicable, when you apply for a lease or loan through Apple Upgrade, for identity verification, and to help prevent fraud, and may include the name and billing address associated with your Apple Account and general information about your Apple Account, iTunes, and App Store account activity (for example, whether you have a long history of transactions within iTunes).
If more information is needed to verify your identity, Klarna will ask to scan your driver’s license or state-issued photo ID or ask you to verify your identity with your bank. The image of your photo ID is securely transferred to certain third-party identity verification service providers to verify your identity and to help prevent fraud. Apple does not read or store the image of your photo ID, but receives the name and address from your photo ID for identity verification to prevent Apple Upgrade application fraud.
Certain transaction and experience information about your relationship with Apple may be shared with and used by Klarna for Apple Upgrade application decisioning, and may include:
- How long you have had your Apple Account
- Devices associated with your Apple Account
- When an Apple Media Services purchase was last made with the payment methods linked to your Apple Account
- Failed Apple Media Services transactions within the past three months and three years on payment methods linked to your Apple Account
Klarna will not use this information for purposes other than assessing and approving Apple Upgrade applications.
Once your application has been completed, Klarna will provide Apple with the status of your application as well as the decision outcome for use in application processing. If additional identity verification measures are required, Klarna will also send Apple confirmation as to whether identity verification was successful for use in application processing. If your application has been declined, Klarna will send Apple a reason code for use in application processing.
Your Apple Account will automatically be linked to your Klarna account. Information you provide Klarna in connection with your application, lease, or loan will be used as described herein and in accordance with Klarna’s Privacy Policy, which can be found at https://www.klarna.com/us/privacy. Information you provide WebBank in connection with your application or loan will be used as described herein and in accordance with WebBank’s Privacy Notice, which can be found at https://cdn.klarna.com/1.0/shared/content/legal/terms/en-US/2.1.0/WebBankPrivacyNotice.
Apple Upgrade Payments
When you apply for a lease or loan through Apple Upgrade and set up a payment method, Klarna will check to see if you have already provisioned an eligible payment card to your account with Klarna and, if so, will default to that payment method. If no eligible payment cards are available, or you would like to select a different payment method from the default, you may select a payment method provisioned through your Apple Account or add a new payment card to make payments. Information about the payment method you use for your Apple Upgrade payments, including the payment card number, date of payments, auto-pay enrollment, and similar, will be stored by Klarna or WebBank, as applicable, for so long as is necessary to complete your payment, to prevent fraud, and as required by law.
Your Apple Upgrade payment status (for example, current, delinquent) will not impact your access to other Apple products and services, such as your iCloud storage or media subscriptions. However, Klarna and WebBank will share cases of confirmed fraud with Apple, which Apple may use to help prevent fraud.
Apple Upgrade Order Tracking and Management
To provide you with order tracking, upon completing an Apple Upgrade order, Apple will send your order information that you can use to track your order. Apple also provides Klarna, and, if applicable for loans, Klarna provides WebBank, with order details, order shipment information, and trade-in status for order tracking and lease or loan management.
After an application is approved and your order is placed, Apple will share with Klarna, and, if applicable for loans, Klarna will share with WebBank, information relating to eligibility for Upgrades, the state of your device or hardware when returned at the end of your lease or loan, and whether the device or hardware is covered by an AppleCare plan for use in lease or loan management. Klarna will also provide Apple with information about your lease or loan, including information about your lease or loan balances, payment status (including payment declines), and term, and information associated with your linked account with Klarna for use in Apple Upgrade program management and to help prevent fraud.
