Using Tap to Verify on iPhone
When making an in-app transaction, an app may ask you to provide additional verification by physically tapping your payment credential using Tap to Verify on iPhone. Apple is not involved in the app’s decision to request additional verification from you. To initiate a Tap to Verify on iPhone session, Apple collects data about your device necessary to open a valid virtual payment terminal, such as a device ID, and information your device’s settings, such as the OS version. Apple also collects a token indicating your hardware is secure. If validated, Apple sends back a valid session token to your device, which your device will use for Tap to Verify on iPhone. Apple stores this data for 25 days, solely to comply with payment card industry standards. After the valid session has been created, you will be able to tap the contactless payment credential on your iPhone to demonstrate your possession of your payment credential. As part of the Tap to Verify on iPhone session, the app may perform an Account Status Inquiry, or zero-dollar transaction, on the payment credential. Apple is not involved in the app’s decision to perform an Account Status Inquiry and does not see or process your payment credential data during an Account Status Inquiry. Apple is also not involved in the app’s decision whether to allow the attempted transaction.
Tap to Verify on iPhone and Analytics
To help improve Tap to Verify on iPhone, Apple collects information about your use of Tap to Verify on iPhone and stores that information in a way that does not identify you personally. This information includes the time it takes to complete a Tap to Verify on iPhone session. Apple may also use this information to improve other Apple products and services, for marketing, and for fraud prevention and security purposes.
Where Apple acts as a data controller with respect to the processing of personal data relating to Tap to Verify on iPhone, such activities are provided by Apple Payments Services LLC or its subsidiary, Apple Processing LLC.
