Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)

  • Overview

The 85 Watt MagSafe Power Adapter features a magnetic DC connector that ensures your power cable will disconnect if it experiences undue strain and helps prevent fraying or weakening of the cables over time. In addition, the magnetic DC helps guide the plug into the system for a quick and secure connection.

When the connection is secure, an LED located at the head of the DC connector will light up; an amber light lets you know that your portable is charging, while a green light tells you that you have a full charge. An AC lead is provided with the adapter for maximum lead length, while the AC wall adapter (also provided) gives users an even easier and more compact way to travel.

Designed to be the perfect travelling companion, the adapter has a clever design that allows the DC cable to be wound neatly around itself for easy cable storage.

This power adapter recharges the lithium polymer battery while the system is off, on, or in sleep mode. It also powers the system if you choose to operate without a battery.

Compatible with 15- or 17-inch MacBook Pro.

Not sure if this is the right power adapter for your Mac?

See this article for more details about choosing the right one.

Knowing which specific Mac model you have is important. If you are running OS X Lion (10.7) or later, go to the “” menu at the top left of your screen, choose “About this Mac” then click the “More Info...” button. Your Mac model and generation will be displayed.

For such a great engineering company, why can't you get the obvious things fixed. These cords fray at the connector. ALL of them do. Sometimes at the power brick, sometimes at the Mac end. Then I have to go spend 80 bucks for another adapter - when all I really need is the cord. So do the right thing, and put a MagSafe connector on BOTH ends of the cord, and a MagSafe jack on the side of the power brick just like the one on the side of the computer. Then, I could (1) disconnect the cord completely from the adapter when it's in my bag, and not have to worry about the cord getting bent and broken where it connects to the power brick, (2) could have my choice of cord lenghts - maybe a short one for my desk and a long one when I travel, and (3) I could replace JUST THE CORD if it got damaged or worn, for something like 5 or 6 bucks instead of 80. What do you think? Would it be so hard to do?

Yes for Unibody, No for older MBP's

Buyer beware, save yourself the hassle and find an 'I" MagSafe charger if you have a non-unibody.

Why won't Apple fix these awful power cords?

They are horribly overpriced at $80 and they break every 8 months or so. Clearly a goldmine for Apple. In the past 3 years, I've had one break near the magnetic end and one near the wall plug end. A third just mysteriously quit working, though it looks brand new. I am very careful with these cords, but it makes no difference. Also, they get dangerously hot. I had just talked my mom into switching from PC to Mac, but honestly now I might talk her back into a PC. I know these complaints are not new. Several reviews say the same thing. So when is Apple going to fix the problem? Or at least come up with a "Buy 3 Cords Get 1 Free" deal?

I ruin NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING..my car is a 1998 BMW Convertible which still is in showroom condition because I keep it that way..I do this with everything I own. This, however is a piece of garbage as many have said it frays at the base of the cord then splits..It's DANGEROUS..wouldn't you rather have us put this money towards new products ? Just my 2 cents

Clearly, at $80 it's a recurring stream of revenue for Apple. The only way to ever not break it, is to put it in one place and never move it. So, basically you might as well own a desktop. Between this and the iphone power cords that fray every few months, I'm not interested in ever buying another laptop or phone from Apple.

      Yet another one!

I love these supplies so much that I just can’t stop buying them. Lucky for me they only last about 1 year! I have lost track of how many of these supplies I love these supplies so much that I just can’t stop buying them. Lucky for me they only last about 1 year! I have lost track of how many of these supplies have died on me, the wire always breaks just before the MagSafe connector. My family has 3 MacBooks that use MagSafe 1, and one MacBook that uses MagSafe 2. Maybe Apple should do some sort of special offer, maybe buy two get one free, or get one free after buying five. My 2011 MacBook Pro is still going strong, but I have spent a fortune on new supplies for it.
