Problems connecting two LG Ultrafines with new 15 inch MacBook Pro

It also appears that the MacBook will not charge via the Thunder bolt cable if the USB-C hub is being used for other peripherals (e.g., charging my iPhone). Considering that Apple unveiled the new MacBook Pro, showcasing a setup with two external LG Ultrafines, it's pretty disappointing that these basic functions don't work seamlessly. When you also consider there very high price for these items, it's not really acceptable. The monitors are beautiful (when they are working) - but I'm waiting to see if Apple fixes these issues fast - otherwise the monitors get returned. Apple Support don't know anything about the problem because it's too new.

The display finish is similar to Apple's latest MacBook Pros - clear, glossy but very little reflectance - the best of both worlds. Connected to my 2016 MacBook Pro with its native USB-C connector, the display is stunning. Another surprise? The built-in speakers on this monitor are amazingly clear, loud, and good quality, unlike most monitors. You can even feel the bass (to some extent - don't expect miracles). Now for the downside for all who had *hoped* they could connect this to older Macs with adapters. You can't. The specifications are very clear - this monitor requires a Mac with a native USB-C connector. Apple's Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter doesn't provide DisplayPort pass through. And third party USB-C to DisplayPort 1.2 connectors don't handle the 4096x2304 resolution of this monitor. The monitor is simply not recognized by older Macs.

Charges MacBook and functions as USB-C hub allowing connection of external drive for Time Machine, iPhone/watch/iPad, etc. (w/purchase of additional dongle). Internal display speakers sound ok but aren't great. Display looks awesome (zero stuck pixels and no other visible flaws I can see).

Absolutely stunning Monitor - Worth the Money

I was really reluctant to spent this amount of money but after trying another brand's 4K monitor and a Dell Ultra Sharp Monitor, both of which offered terrible image quality, I decided to try the LG UltraFine 4K Display and I am absolutely blow away. The resolution and quality of the display is outstanding and I love that I can control sound, brightness, etc. right from my Apple Wireless Keyboard. I am so glad that I decided to make this purchase. I was a bit hesitant reading some of the less that satisfied reviews but I have to say that in my opinion, if you have a MacBook Pro, this is the monitor you need. You get what you pay for.

A warning for those purchasing an LG UltraFine display

LG again replaced my display in early 2018 after the continued issues with LG first replaced my unit in early 2017, I was left without a display for a month. LG again replaced my display in early 2018 after the continued issues with the replacement unit. Another set of hours on the phone, another month without an external display. When the 2nd replacement arrived (3rd unit in total), it too was defective. They agreed to replace the unit. Another month without a display. My 3rd replacement unit arrived and worked up until 2 weeks ago (so roughly 8 months). The screen is flickering again and the base of the unit stopped functioning altogether. I’m currently using books to prop up a $700 display. LG refuses to repair the unit, citing that it is no longer covered by a warranty. So a product they replaced 8 months ago isn’t guaranteed to work beyond 8 months. So, to recap, a $700 “premium product” has now failed 4 times in less than 2 years, with which I was without for a total of 3 months, and is now my financial responsibility. This is unreasonable. It seems I was an early adopter with a dud, LG has sent me multiple defective units, and I now have a $700 paperweight. I trusted Apple when they launched this LG product with their new MacBook design. I trusted Apple partnered with a company that could offer reasonable support if their products failed. I was very much wrong. Never ever purchasing an LG product again, and definitely cautious of any third party products Apple recommends.

My favorite display – not for everyone.

I have never seen another display that matches the image quality of this display. The resolution is comparable to that of an iPhone. At least for me, despite it I have never seen another display that matches the image quality of this display. The resolution is comparable to that of an iPhone. At least for me, despite it's small size, I look at the display it actually seems much bigger than it actually is because of this extremely high resolution. It looks more like a backlit large scale photograph in a museum. I only give it four stars because it's use of Thunderbolt 3 complicates using this display with any other non-apple device. It is possible with the help of a PCIe card from Sunix (at the time of writing, the UPD2018) and a powered PCI extension slot (any will do). The slot only needs to be connected to an external power source, not an existing PCI bus.
