Mac Pro is powered by Intel Xeon W processors, which feature Turbo Boost, Hyper-Threading, up to 66.5MB of shared L3 cache on a single chip, AVX-512 vector instructions, and 64 PCI Express lanes for massive bandwidth. It’s also configurable up to 28 processing cores, allowing it to support up to 1.5TB of memory at 2933MHz. And thanks to the power and thermal design of Mac Pro, Intel Xeon W processors can run fully unconstrained, delivering maximum performance.

Selecting a processor with the right number of cores for your needs largely depends on the software you’ll be using. For instance, single-thread applications operate more efficiently with higher clock speeds, while software that uses multithreading will run best on a processor with more cores.

8-core Intel Xeon

At 3.5GHz with a Turbo Boost speed of up to 4.0GHz, the 8-core Xeon processor gives you the power to tackle everything from game development to video editing and more.

12-core and 16-core Intel Xeon

The 12-core and 16-core Xeon processors are designed to simultaneously run multiple professional applications and applications that take advantage of extreme multithreading, which is more suitable for tasks like CPU rendering, compiling large projects, running multiple virtual machines, and CPU-bound computations.

24-core and 28-core Intel Xeon

The 24-core and 28-core Xeon processors with Turbo Boost up to 4.4GHz can help you tackle even the most demanding pro workloads. Selecting one of these processors will also allow you to configure your Mac Pro with 1.5TB of memory using twelve 128GB LR-DIMMs.

Select the 24-core or 28-core Intel Xeon processor if you want to maximize the memory in your Mac Pro to 1.5TB.

Mac Pro supports up to 768GB of quad-channel 2666MHz DDR4 ECC memory for the 8-core Intel Xeon processor, up to 768GB of six-channel 2933MHz DDR4 ECC memory for the 12-core and 16-core Intel Xeon processors, and up to 1.5TB of six-channel 2933MHz DDR4 ECC memory for the 24-core and 28-core Intel Xeon processors.

With more memory in your Mac Pro, you can run more apps simultaneously and work with larger data sets with a higher rate of performance. Your Mac Pro is also user accessible with 12 physical DIMM slots, so in the future you can upgrade to more memory that is compatible with your processor.

The 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB DDR4 modules are R-DIMMs; the 64GB and 128GB DDR4 modules are LR-DIMMs. Mac Pro supports R-DIMM and LR-DIMM memory modules, but the two DIMM types cannot be used in the same system.

The 1.5TB memory option requires a 24-core or 28-core processor.

Mac Pro features a modular graphics expansion architecture called the Mac Pro Expansion Module, or MPX Module, that delivers more power and bandwidth and integrates Thunderbolt throughout the system. You can choose one or two MPX Modules to configure the graphics in your Mac Pro, or add MPX Modules later to change or upgrade your Mac Pro graphics capabilities.

AMD Radeon Pro 580X

For great all-around graphics performance, choose the AMD Radeon Pro 580X with 8GB of GDDR5 memory. It features up to 5.6 teraflops of performance and supports up to six 4K displays, two 5K displays, or two Pro Display XDRs. And the half-height MPX Module fits in an MPX bay and enables PCIe slot 2 for additional expansion.

AMD Radeon Pro W5500X

The AMD Radeon Pro W5500X with 8GB of GDDR6 memory is based on AMD’s RDNA architecture, featuring up to 5.6 teraflops of single-precision performance or 11.2 teraflops of half-precision computing. It supports up to four 4K displays, one 5K display, or one Pro Display XDR. The half-height MPX Module design fits in either MPX bay and enables an additional PCIe slot for additional expansion. And up to two Radeon Pro W5500X MPX Modules can be installed in Mac Pro, one in each MPX bay.

AMD Radeon Pro W5700X

For even better performance, choose the Radeon Pro W5700X with 16GB of GDDR6 memory. This full-size MPX Module is based on AMD’s new RDNA architecture, and it features up to 9.4 teraflops of single-precision or 18.9 teraflops of half-precision computing. It supports up to six 4K displays, three 5K displays, or three Pro Display XDRs. And you also get four Thunderbolt 3 ports and one HDMI 2.0 port.

AMD Radeon Pro Vega II

For workstation-class graphics and demanding pro applications, choose the AMD Radeon Pro Vega II with 32GB of HBM2 memory delivering up to 1TB/s memory bandwidth. You can install up to two in your Mac Pro using Infinity Fabric Link for applications like Final Cut Pro X, which utilizes enhanced multi-GPU performance. This graphics option also features up to 14.1 teraflops of single-precision or 28.3 teraflops of half-precision computing. It supports up to six 4K displays, three 5K displays, or two Pro Display XDRs. And the full-height MPX Module fills an MPX bay and uses extra power and PCIe bandwidth to deliver four additional Thunderbolt 3 ports and an HDMI 2.0 port on the card. When you select the option with two Vega II GPUs, the Infinity Fabric Link connector comes preinstalled.

AMD Radeon Pro Vega II Duo

To push your graphics performance even further, choose the Radeon Pro Vega II Duo, which is ideal for even the most demanding multi-GPU pro applications. The module has two Vega II GPUs on the board, each with 32GB of HBM2 memory delivering up to 1TB/s memory bandwidth; the two GPUs are connected with Infinity Fabric Link. Install two modules in your Mac Pro for intensive tasks like GPU rendering. Get up to 28.3 teraflops of single-precision or 56.6 teraflops of half-precision computing. It supports up to eight 4K displays, four 5K displays, or four Pro Display XDRs. And the full-height MPX Module fills an MPX bay and uses extra power and PCIe bandwidth to deliver four additional Thunderbolt 3 ports and an HDMI 2.0 port on the card.

Mac Pro can be configured with up to 8TB of fast NVMe-based SSD storage. SSD storage delivers significantly improved performance compared with a traditional hard drive — speed you will notice when you start up your Mac Pro, launch an application, open a big project, or tackle data-intensive tasks. SSD storage has no moving parts, so it operates silently. And Mac Pro storage is powered by the Apple T2 Security Chip and is always encrypted.

Note: 1TB = 1 trillion bytes; actual formatted capacity less.
