Last night, Apple TV+ was honoured as part of the Spotlight Section at the New York Film Festival with the world premiere of the highly anticipated documentary event, “Mr. Scorsese,” about the life of legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese. All five episodes of the documentary series were showcased at NYFF as part of this special presentation of Rebecca Miller’s cinematic portrait of Scorsese, which explores his life and revisits his legendary body of work, analysing the many facets of a visionary who redefined filmmaking. Hundreds of film lovers turned out for the premiere, making it a true celebration of Scorsese, with a full house witnessing the legendary filmmaker’s career ahead of the global premiere on 17 October on Apple TV+.
Told through the lens of acclaimed director Rebecca Miller, the premiere event for the documentary series was introduced by Miller herself, along with executive producers Damon Cardasis and Cindy Tolan, and editor David Bartner. In her introduction, Miller said, “Thank you Dennis Lim and the New York Film Festival committee for having a vision to show all these episodes in a single portrait, which is my dream come true, and thank you to Apple TV+, LBI, and all those at Sikelia, and all the people who worked so hard for so long, on this project. Most of all, thank you, Marty, for your honesty and your trust as we have this conversation that spanned five years. It was one of the great privileges of my life.”
Following the screening, “Mr. Scorsese” received a standing ovation from the audience with Miller, Scorsese and Robert De Niro in the Spotlight moment.

In attendance at the world premiere were friends and longtime collaborators of Scorsese, including De Niro, Daniel Day-Lewis, Josh Safdie, Jay Cocks, Nick Pileggi, Irwin Winkler, Ari Aster, Mark Harris and Ellen Lewis, along with Scorsese’s daughters, Cathy, Domenica and Francesca, and Ronan and Cashel Day-Lewis.
“Mr. Scorsese” examines how Scorsese’s life informed his artistic vision as each film he made stunned the world with originality. Starting with his New York University student films through to the present day, this documentary explores the themes that have fascinated Scorsese and informed his work throughout, including the place of good and evil in the fundamental nature of humankind. With exclusive, unrestricted access to Scorsese’s private archives, the documentary series is anchored by extensive conversations with the filmmaker himself and interviews with friends, family and creative collaborators including Robert De Niro, Daniel Day-Lewis, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mick Jagger, Robbie Robertson, Thelma Schoonmaker, Steven Spielberg, Sharon Stone, Jodie Foster, Paul Schrader, Margot Robbie, Cate Blanchett, Jay Cocks and Rodrigo Prieto, along with his children, wife Helen Morris and close childhood friends.
Directed by filmmaker Miller (“She Came to Me,” “Personal Velocity: Three Portraits”), “Mr. Scorsese” originated with executive producers Miller and Damon Cardasis at Round Films (“Maggie’s Plan,” “Saturday Church”), and Cindy Tolan (“Étoile,” “Dandelion”), Miller’s longtime creative collaborator. Emmy Award-nominated trio Cardasis, Tolan and Miller (“Arthur Miller: Writer”) serve as executive producers of “Mr. Scorsese” alongside Rick Yorn, Christopher Donnelly and Julie Yorn. Ron Burkle produces, with Robert Fernandez and Patrick Walmsley as co-executive producers. The series is presented by Expanded Media and Round Films in association with LBI Entertainment and Moxie Pictures.
“Mr. Scorsese” joins the award-winning slate of Apple Original documentaries, including Emmy and Critics Choice Award-winning “STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie,” recounting Fox’s extraordinary journey in his own words; Emmy Award-nominated “Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me,” a uniquely raw and intimate documentary spanning her six-year journey into a new light; Emmy Award-nominated “STEVE! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces,” featuring legendary writer, producer, director, actor and comedian Steve Martin; and the recently announced untitled Fleetwood Mac documentary, among many others.
