Apple TV+ lands record 15 BAFTA Television Award nominations for hit series “Bad Sisters,” “Pachinko,” “Slow Horses,” “The Essex Serpent” and “Black Bird”

Today, the BAFTA Television and BAFTA Craft Awards honored Apple TV+ with a record 15 nominations across five programs, including Best Drama Series for globally acclaimed hit “Bad Sisters,” and Best International program for Gotham Award and Humanitas Prize-winning drama “Pachinko.” Academy Award winner Gary Oldman and SAG Award nominee Taron Egerton landed Best Leading Actor nominations for “Slow Horses” and “Black Bird,” respectively. Stars Anne-Marie Duff and Jack Lowden scored Best Supporting nods for performances in “Bad Sisters” and “Slow Horses,” and “Bad Sisters” helmer Dearbhla Walsh earned a Best Director: Fiction nomination. The BAFTA TV and Craft Awards recognise the best British programs, performances and productions each year. The BAFTA TV Awards ceremony will be broadcast on BBC One on Sunday, 14 May and the BAFTA Craft Awards will take place on Sunday, 23 April.

Celebrated black comedy thriller “Bad Sisters,” created by BAFTA TV Award-winning star and executive producer Sharon Horgan, landed nominations for Best Drama Series and Best Supporting Actress for Anne-Marie Duff as well as nominations for Dearbhla Walsh for Best Director: Fiction; Nina Gold and Lucy Amos for Best Scripted Casting; and Peter Anderson Studio for Best Titles & Graphic Identity. The series has been previously recognised by the WGA, the Critics Choice Awards, the Royal Television Society and the Irish Film and Television Awards.
Critically acclaimed drama “Pachinko” lands a Best International program nomination, following previous awards recognition including Gotham Awards, Humanitas Prize, AFI Awards, ADG, Critics Choice Awards, Film Independent Spirit Awards wins and Emmy Award, CSA, Dorian Award and Television Critics Association nominations.
Academy Award winner Gary Oldman receives his first BAFTA TV Award nomination for Best Lead Actor as the irascible leader of a team of disgraced M15 intelligence officers in the darkly funny espionage drama “Slow Horses.” Co-star Jack Lowden picked up a nomination for Best Supporting Actor, alongside nods for Katie Weiland for Best Editing: Fiction; Daniel Pemberton and Mick Jagger for Best Original Music: Fiction; and Martin Jensen, Joe Beal, Duncan Price, Craig Butters, Sarah Elias and Andrew Sissons for Best Sound: Fiction.
“The Essex Serpent” earns BAFTA Craft Award nominations including for Jane Petrie for Best Costume Design; Alice Normington for Best Production Design, and yU+co for Best Titles and Graphic Identity.
“Black Bird” scores a Best Leading Actor nod for star Taron Egerton, the latest in a string of accolades including Critics Choice Award and Golden Globe Award wins, and a SAG Award nomination.
These mark the most recent honours from the BAFTA TV Awards for Apple TV+ programs following wins in 2022 for Editing: Factual for “9/11: Inside the President’s War Room” and Sound: Factual for “1971: The Year That Changed Everything,” as well as nominations in 2021 for “Little America,” “Tiny World” and “Earth at Night in Colour.”

“Bad Sisters”
In “Bad Sisters,” the tight-knit Garvey sisters have always looked out for each other. When their brother-in-law winds up dead, his life insurers launch an investigation to prove malicious intent — and set their sights on the sisters, all of whom had ample reason to kill him. The “Bad Sisters” ensemble cast is led by Sharon Horgan, Anne-Marie Duff, Eva Birthistle, Sarah Greene, and Eve Hewson as the Garvey sisters. Claes Bang, Brian Gleeson, Daryl McCormack, Assaad Bouab, and newcomer Saise Quinn round out the ensemble cast.
“Slow Horses”
The darkly humorous espionage drama follows a dysfunctional team of British intelligence agents who serve in a dumping-ground department of MI5 known unaffectionately as Slough House. Gary Oldman stars as Jackson Lamb, the brilliant but irascible leader of the spies, who end up in Slough House due to their career-ending mistakes as they frequently find themselves blundering around the smoke and mirrors of the espionage world. Set in Victorian England featuring a star studded cast led by Claire Danes, Tom Hiddleston, Frank Dillane, Clémence Poésy, and Hayley Squires, “The Essex Serpent” follows London widow Cora Seaborne (Danes) who moves to Essex to investigate reports of a mythical serpent. She forms a surprising bond of science and skepticism with the local pastor (Hiddleston), but when tragedy strikes, locals accuse her of attracting the creature.

“Pachinko” chronicles the hopes and dreams of a Korean immigrant family across four generations as they leave their homeland in an indomitable quest to survive and thrive. Starting in South Korea in the early 1900s, the story is told through the eyes of a remarkable matriarch, Sunja, who triumphs against all odds.
“Black Bird”
Inspired by actual events, when high school football hero and decorated policeman’s son Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton) is sentenced to 10 years in a minimum security prison, he is given the choice of a lifetime — enter a maximum-security prison for the criminally insane and befriend suspected serial killer Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser), or stay where he is and serve his full sentence with no possibility of parole. Keene quickly realises his only way out is to elicit a confession and find out where the bodies of several young girls are buried before Hall’s appeal goes through. But is this suspected killer telling the truth? Or is it just another tale from a serial liar? This dramatic and captivating story subverts the crime genre by enlisting the help of the very people put behind bars to solve its mysteries.
