Apple Introduces Xcode, the Fastest Way to Create Mac OS X Applications

MARKHAM, Ontario—June 23, 2003—Apple® today announced Xcode, a set ofpowerful developer tools that paves the way for the next generation ofapplications for Mac® OS X. Xcode brings innovation back to the developertools market by combining a high performance UNIX-based developmentenvironment, a breakthrough user interface and powerful performancetechnologies including Fix and Continue, Zero Link and Distributed Build.Xcode delivers performance improvements that are five times faster thanApple’s previous generation developer tools, delivering significantly fasterturn around times for developers creating applications for Mac OS X.
“Xcode merges the power of a world class UNIX-based development environmentwith a simple, elegant and powerful user interface,” said Philip Schiller,Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “Xcode takesmuch of the legwork out of creating apps by putting powerful tools atdevelopers’ fingertips and is the best and fastest way to build the nextgeneration of Mac OS X applications.”
With the Xcode Fix and Continue feature, developers can make live codechanges to a running application and see their effect immediately withoutthe need to restart the application. Dramatically reduced turnaround timesare achieved with Zero Link which removes the linking stage for alldevelopment builds. Project build times are minimized through aRendezvous©-enabled Distributed Build feature allowing developers to compileapplications using multiple systems.
The stunning and easy-to-navigate user interface in Xcode represents arevolutionary approach to developer productivity by presenting all theinformation and tools developers need in a streamlined interface similar tothe successful iTunes® and iPhoto© consumer applications. Smart Groups, similar to Playlists in iTunes, provide a powerful and easy new way toorganize projects while Fast Find delivers a consistent search interfacewith live indexing that refines searches as they are entered. Codecompletion increases accuracy while API documentation is accessible directlyfrom the source code editor allowing fewer distractions and higherproductivity. An easy migration path for CodeWarrior allows developers todirectly import CodeWarrior project files into Xcode.
Xcode fully supports new Apple technologies and is built to optimizeapplications for the next generation Apple PowerPC G5 processor. Developerscan use AppleScript® and Apple’s graphical development tools to quicklycreate native Mac OS X applications that take advantage of Apple’s richCocoa® programming environment and Aqua® user interface.
