Some/many DACs pull more current than the Lightning port will allow, resulting in a warning screen and no operation. The USB 3 adapter has an extra port to allow external power, similar to a powered USB hub. External power is required for 2 of my 3 DACs (HiFiMeDIY 9018 and Schiit Modi require external power, Schiit Modi Multibit does not.) I hope this helps.

Maybe, probably not though. If you want to use it for connecting to MIDI sources get the Lighting to Maybe, probably not though. If you want to use it for connecting to MIDI sources get the Lighting to USB 3 adapter, because that one has both USB and lightning. And it uses the lighting port for supplying extra power to devices/peripherals. This is the part of the description of the Lightning to USB 3, "Then you can connect USB peripherals like hubs, Ethernet adapters, audio/MIDI interfaces, and card readers for CompactFlash, SD, microSD, and more."
