Iris van Herpen

Reshaping fashion

Inspired by unorthodox art techniques and materials, Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen sought to create clothes that were more sculptural. She began designing on a Mac and using a 3D printer to turn her ideas into reality. Her work is futuristic but also displays an unexpected handmade quality. The stunning results weren’t just seen on runways; they were spotted on the likes of Björk and Lady Gaga.

Iris van Herpen initially saw the computer as a strictly two-dimensional environment. For someone who often begins the creative process by sketching on a mannequin, that wouldn’t work. But when she discovered 3D printing, everything changed.
The last technology to have a major impact on the traditional world of haute couture was the sewing machine. At van Herpen’s first show in Paris, almost half of her collection came out of a 3D printer.
