I I have been using an Apple LED Cinema Display (24") with my 2008 Mac Pro, and it's replacement, a 2018 Mac Mini. Needless to say, I was due for a new monitor. I was holding out for a new Apple monitor that I hoped would show up at WWDC 2019, but not only is the new Apple monitor outside of any rational home budget, it's much too large for my home workspace. This is about as plain as monitors get, but the panel itself is gorgeous, the setup seamless with the Mac Mini and the speakers sound surprisingly good. The first gen LG monitors had issues, they updated the 27" version to fix those if Amazon reviews are to be believed, but why pay 2X for marginally more real estate. And the 20" LG, now discontinued was too small. The Mac Mini + LG Ultrafine 24" is the iMac 24" we've never had. BTW, if I was still working (I'm retired), I would love this monitor with a MacBook on my office desk. The monitor comes with the cable needed for the Mac Mini 2018 or latest MacBook Pro. It also includes a VESA mount adapter. And a stand :).

Sufficient power in the Thunderbolt 3 ports to charge my 2018 MacBook Pro as well as run a UA Arrow audio interface with no lag whatsoever. The downside I read in some reviews was the lack of camera, but I just put my existing HD USB camera on top and ran it with a USB-C interface plug to one of the other ports. The stand pops off easily with one locking slide, and the VESA plate pops in so I can use my existing mount. I have not tested the internal speakers, so I’m not going to comment on those. I couldn’t be happier with this purchase!

      Pretty happy

Th I had a different LG display that was a 27" UHD 4K monitor. It was alright but I hated that I couldn't use my keyboard to control the on screen brightness. This worked instantly out of the box. I can use all the on keyboard functions such as brightness now. The color is great. I have it hooked up to a 6 core mini with 32gb of ram. I plan on getting a second monitor here in another month. My only complaint is I wish the monitor was a little bit higher. It's plenty wide but the height leaves something to be desired. I feel like my windows are a little squished even with changing the scaling if i go any smaller I wouldn't be able to read what I was typing/looking at. Thank you for bringing such a nice little monitor to us LG/Apple. Would have been nice to have had a camera within the monitor for $700 I would have at least expected that.

There was only one true "retina grade" desktop display, the LG Ultrafine 27"; the initial released product had some flaws, and after a couple years it disappeared from the market. This has re-appeared in its place. The 27" had the same 200dpi resolution as the 5k iMac. This 24" display has a 180dpi resolution. In "retina theory," one should be sitting farther away from the screen than from a 27" display for it to be considered retina-grade. Of course, people don't sit farther from smaller monitors, they sit closer. What this means is that if you put this screen next to a 5k iMac or a Macbook Pro at native resolution, everything on the 24" display is going to look too big, like Duplo Lego blocks. Fortunately, one can use resolution scaling to size everything approximately correct; your screen motion latency will suffer a bit, but you won't notice unless you're looking for it. The USB-C and built-in speakers are great. A camera is present but MacOS doesn't seem to see it and the documentation doesn't say anything about it. As it stands, this is the best and only retina-grade desktop display money can buy (excepting used/refurbished LG 27" Ultrafines), until the new Apple display debuts at $5000. I do hope that this display, with its refined construction and design language, is a sign that LG is re-releasing their 27" very soon.
