Best Answer:
Yes, provided your Mac is supported by El Capitan.
As an aside, any Mac that can run OS 10.9 ( Yes, provided your Mac is supported by El Capitan.
As an aside, any Mac that can run OS 10.9 (Mavericks) or OS 10.10 (Yosemite) can also run OS 10.11 (El Capitan). But for Macs running OS 10.7 (Lion) and OS 10.8 (Mountain Lion), one needs to check whether El Capitan can support those Macs.
Most Macs released in last 5+ years are supported by El Capitan. Including:
iMac (Mid-2007 or newer)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or newer), (15-inch, Mid / Late 2007 or newer), (17-inch, Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
Xserve (Early 2009)
Another way to find out . . . try downloading and installing. The installer should tell you if El Capitan can not be installed on your Mac. …- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouver

OS 10.9 Go to the App Store app on your Mac and download/install the free OS 10.11 (El Capitan).
OS 10.9 (Mavericks) and OS 10.10 (Yosemite) are no longer available as all Macs that could support either of those two OS X versions can also support OS 10.11 (El Capitan).
OS 10.8 (Mountain Lion) is available by purchasing a redemption code through the online Apple Store. Instructions will be provided to redeem the code through the App Store app in order to download/install OS 10.8.
Note that whichever OS X you want to install must be compatible with your Mac's hardware, so check the system requirements of each OS X version. …- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouver

How to install Snow Leopard
- Asked by Zane A
- Apr 13, 2017
Answer
OS 10.6 is Snow Leopard, that is what you are trying to put on. To my knowledge, Snow Leopard is o OS 10.6 is Snow Leopard, that is what you are trying to put on. To my knowledge, Snow Leopard is only available on DVD from Apple and once installed all updates should be done through "Software Update" under the "Apple" menu. If you downloaded Snow Leopard from somewhere, you may have downloaded an update instead of the full retail version of Snow Leopard.
You will require the Snow Leopard DVD. It was recently sold out at the online Apple Store, but I see it is available again but with a 3 to 4 week wait time (probably so Apple can get more DVDs produced).
Please note that your old iMac must have an Intel processor in order for Snow Leopard to install. It cannot have a PowerPC processor.
To check which processor the old iMac has, go to "About This Mac" in the "Apple" Menu. To be able to install Snow Leopard, make sure the word "Intel" appears somewhere beside "Processor".
(Also note: Snow Leopard will not install on Macs sold since 2011 or so, but Snow Leopard may run on more recent Macs. Simply install on an external drive using an old intel-based Mac, then connect drive to newer Mac and try starting up from it.) …- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouver

Answer
Depends on your Mac.
If it has a PowerPC processor, then OS 10.5.8 is the last OS X that will wor Depends on your Mac.
If it has a PowerPC processor, then OS 10.5.8 is the last OS X that will work on your Mac.
If it has an Intel processor, then you can upgrade to Snow Leopard (OS 10.6) and do a software update to OS 10.6.8.
Then depending on your Mac's hardware, you can upgrade directly to OS 10.7, OS 10.8, or OS 10.11. (OS 10.9 and OS 10.10 are no longer available, as any Mac that can run those versions, can also run OS 10.11.)
Once OS 10.7 or later is running on your Mac, and if your hardware is supported (which I doubt) you can upgrade to OS 10.12.
Note that OS 10.11 & OS 10.12 are free downloads through the App Store app which is installed with all Macs from OS 10.6.8 onward. OS 10.7 & OS 10.8 are also downloaded through the App Store app but first require the purchase of a redemption code through the online Apple Store. …- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouver
