Upgrade to your favorite iPhone. Year after year.

As a member of the iPhone Upgrade Program, you can get a new iPhone once you’ve made the equivalent of at least 12 payments.1 And you’ll get your choice of AppleCare+ coverage, too.

Check upgrade eligibility

Here’s how to upgrade:

  1. Start by checking your upgrade eligibility.

Once you’ve confirmed that you’re eligible, just choose the iPhone you’d like to upgrade to. Or stop by an Apple Store, and a Specialist will help you choose your new iPhone.2

  2. Choose your level of AppleCare+ coverage.

Decide between standard AppleCare+ or AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss.3

  3. Provide your carrier account details.

If you currently have a wireless account, you’ll need your password and any other relevant account information.

  4. Have your personal information and credit or debit card on hand.

You’ll be asked to provide your Social Security number and date of birth for a credit check. You’ll also need a valid U.S. credit or debit card. Prepaid cards are not accepted. If you’re signing up at an Apple Store, you’ll also need valid primary and secondary forms of ID, and the first and last names on both must match. View acceptable forms of ID

  5. Get your new iPhone. And return your current iPhone to Apple.

If you’re upgrading online or with the Apple Store app, you can have your new iPhone delivered right to your door for free. Once it ships, we’ll send you a Trade-in Kit so you can send your current iPhone back to Apple. You’ll also have the option to pick up your new iPhone in a store — often the same day. When you come to the store, remember to bring your current iPhone with you to trade in.

Be sure you back up your data on your current iPhone to your computer or iCloud before trading it in.

Questions about upgrading

What information is needed to apply for a loan with the iPhone Upgrade Program?

If you’re joining the iPhone Upgrade Program for the first time, you’ll be asked to provide your date of birth, Social Security number, and annual income for a credit check. You’ll also need a valid U.S. credit or debit card. Prepaid cards are not accepted at this time. Click here for full terms and conditions.

If you’re a current member of the iPhone Upgrade Program and enter the Social Security number you used when you first joined the program, your application will be conveniently autofilled with the information that’s already on file with Citizens One. Citizens One reserves the right to perform a credit inquiry as needed to determine loan eligibility. Depending on your account performance and transactional history in the iPhone Upgrade Program, Citizens One may approve your new loan application without your credit being impacted.

What happens to my new loan if I choose to pick up my new iPhone at an Apple Store but then fail to pick it up?

If you do not pick up your iPhone within 14 days after the scheduled pickup date, it will be returned to store inventory. Your new loan will be canceled, and any charges applied to your credit or debit card will be refunded. The monthly payments associated with your current iPhone will continue. Any credit inquiry used to determine loan eligibility during preapproval will not be removed.

If I choose to upgrade to iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, or iPhone XR, what happens to my iPhone Upgrade Program eligibility next year?

You will still be eligible to upgrade next year. However, your new upgrade eligibility date will be determined by the start date of your new iPhone Upgrade Program loan. Please note that you are eligible to upgrade after six months in the program, as long as you have made the equivalent of at least 12 payments.

I just bought a new iPhone. Can I exchange it for the new iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max or iPhone XR?

If you purchased your iPhone within the last 14 days, you can return it by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE or by visiting an Apple Store. When pre-order begins, you’ll be able to purchase the new iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, or iPhone XR.

When I upgrade to a new iPhone with the iPhone Upgrade Program, what happens to my existing AppleCare+ coverage?

When you complete the iPhone trade-in process, we’ll cancel the associated AppleCare+ coverage. Your new AppleCare+ or AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss coverage will be registered to your new iPhone on the day you purchase your device.

What if I want to leave the iPhone Upgrade Program?

If you want to upgrade but do not want to stay in the iPhone Upgrade Program, you should not complete the preapproval process. If you complete the preapproval process, you have to upgrade using this preapproval and cannot opt out of the iPhone Upgrade Program.

If I paid off my previous loan, am I still part of the iPhone Upgrade Program?

After 24 payments, the iPhone is yours, and your iPhone Upgrade Program contract is complete. You can rejoin the iPhone Upgrade Program online or at an Apple Store.

What do my monthly payments cover?

Your monthly payments cover the full cost of iPhone, as well as AppleCare+ coverage.

Why do I need to make a payment to be eligible for an upgrade?

In order to upgrade, you need to make or have made the equivalent of at least 12 payments. You can pay any remaining balance needed to meet your 12 payments at the time of upgrade.

Do I still need to make payments for my current iPhone while I wait for my new iPhone to ship?

Yes. Once it ships, we’ll pause the payments on your current loan, and the payments for your new iPhone will begin. After we receive your trade-in and determine that it’s in good working condition, we’ll close out the associated loan.

I agreed to make a payment to upgrade my iPhone early. Why am I still being billed monthly?

You’ll continue to be charged monthly for your existing loan until your new iPhone has shipped or you pick it up in a store. At that time, your new loan will begin, and the early upgrade payment you made for your original loan will be reassessed. Any amount you paid in excess will be refunded to you.

Can someone else upgrade my iPhone?

Yes. The person who upgrades your iPhone will be responsible for starting a new iPhone Upgrade Program loan agreement.

Can I trade in my current smartphone with Apple GiveBack?

Yes. You can trade in your eligible device, online or in an Apple Store, for an Apple Store Gift Card. If your device is not eligible for credit, we’ll recycle it for free. No matter the model or condition, we can turn it into something good for you and good for the planet. Please note that if the phone is associated with your iPhone Upgrade Program account, you are still responsible for paying the remaining balance of your loan with Citizens Bank.

My current iPhone is damaged. Can I still trade in my device and upgrade?

Yes. If you upgrade online, you may be charged an incident fee after your iPhone is received and assessed for damage. If you upgrade at an Apple Store, you may be charged an incident fee at that time. For more information on fees associated with your AppleCare+ coverage, visit here
