Upgrade to your favorite iPhone. Year after year.

As a member of the iPhone Upgrade Program, you can get a new iPhone once you’ve made the equivalent of at least 12 payments.1 And you’ll get the coverage of AppleCare+.

Check upgrade eligibility

Here’s how to upgrade:

  1. Start by checking your upgrade eligibility.

Once you’ve confirmed that you’re eligible, just choose the iPhone you’d like to upgrade to. Or stop by an Apple Store, and a Specialist will help you choose your new iPhone.2

  2. Provide your carrier account details.

If you currently have a wireless account, you’ll need your password and any other relevant account information.

  3. Back up the data on your current iPhone.

Since you’ll need to return your current iPhone to Apple, remember to back up your data to your computer or iCloud.

  4. Have your personal information and credit card on hand.

You’ll be asked to provide your Social Security number and date of birth for a credit check. You’ll also need a valid U.S. credit card. Debit cards and prepaid cards are not accepted. If you’re signing up at an Apple Store, you’ll also need valid primary and secondary forms of ID, and the first and last names on both must match. View acceptable forms of ID

  5. Get your new iPhone. And return your current iPhone to Apple.

If you’re upgrading online or with the Apple Store app, you can have your new iPhone delivered right to your door for free. Once it ships, we’ll send you a Trade-in Kit so you can send your current iPhone back to Apple. You’ll also have the option to pick up your new iPhone in a store — often the same day. When you come to the store, remember to bring your current iPhone with you to trade in.

Questions about upgrading

I’m already part of the iPhone Upgrade Program. How do I upgrade my current iPhone?

Start by checking your upgrade status to see if you’re eligible for a new iPhone. If you are, you can either proceed with your upgrade online or visit an Apple Store and chat with a Specialist. You can upgrade anytime after six months, as long as you’ve made the equivalent of at least 12 payments. If you have to pay an additional amount to meet your 12 payments, you can do it when you upgrade.

Do I still need to make payments for my current iPhone while I wait for my new iPhone to ship?

Yes. Once it ships, we’ll pause the payments on your current loan and the payments for your new iPhone will begin. After we receive your trade-in and determine that it’s in good working condition, we’ll close out the associated loan.

If I choose to upgrade to iPhone X, what happens to my iPhone Upgrade Program eligibility next year?

You will still be eligible to upgrade next year. However, your new upgrade eligibility date will be determined by the start date of your new iPhone Upgrade Program loan. Please note that you are eligible to upgrade after six months in the program, as long as you have made the equivalent of at least 12 payments.

I agreed to make a payment to upgrade my iPhone early. Why am I still being billed monthly?

You’ll continue to be charged monthly for your existing loan until your new iPhone has shipped or you pick it up in a store. At that time, your new loan will begin, and the early upgrade payment you made for your original loan will be reassessed. Any amount you paid in excess will be refunded to you.

If I paid off my previous loan, am I still part of the iPhone Upgrade Program?

After 24 payments, your iPhone Upgrade Program contract is complete. You can rejoin the iPhone Upgrade Program online or at an Apple Store anytime.

What happens to my new loan if I choose to pick up my new iPhone at an Apple Store but then fail to pick it up?

If you do not pick up your iPhone within 14 days after the scheduled pickup date, it will be returned to store inventory. Your new loan will be canceled, and any charges applied to your credit card will be refunded. The monthly payments associated with your current iPhone will continue. Any credit inquiry used to determine loan eligibility during preapproval will not be removed.

What do my monthly iPhone Upgrade Program payments cover?

Your monthly payments cover the full cost of iPhone and AppleCare+.

When I upgrade to a new iPhone with the iPhone Upgrade Program, what happens to my existing AppleCare+ coverage?

When you complete the iPhone trade-in process, we’ll cancel the associated AppleCare+ coverage. Your new AppleCare+ coverage will be registered to your new iPhone on the day you purchase your device.

What if I don’t want to upgrade with the iPhone Upgrade Program?

You don’t have to. You can upgrade your iPhone with carrier financing or purchase an iPhone at full price, but you’ll need to return your current iPhone to Apple to close the existing loan.

What if I don’t want to upgrade my iPhone?

You’re under no obligation to upgrade, and after 24 payments, the iPhone is yours.

Can someone else upgrade my iPhone?

Yes. The person who upgrades your iPhone will be responsible for starting a new iPhone Upgrade Program loan agreement.

What happens to my carrier plan when I upgrade?

You’ll keep your existing number and carrier rate plan. We’ll activate your new iPhone on your existing account with AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon. T-Mobile customers will need to contact their carrier to complete the activation. If you want to select a new carrier, you can do so by visiting an Apple Store. Just keep in mind that you’re still responsible for honoring any existing commitments with your current carrier.

If I leave the iPhone Upgrade Program, can I trade in my associated iPhone for credit?

Yes. You can take your iPhone to an Apple Store and get credit in return, but you’ll still be responsible for paying the remaining balance of your loan to Citizens One.

Can I switch carriers when I upgrade?

Yes, but you’ll need to visit an Apple Store to do so. A Specialist will help you switch carriers and upgrade to a new iPhone.
